Beta 2.1.4 Released

There was a problem with the 2.1.3 installer. If you're getting weird problems like crashes or inaccessible levels, please uninstall Blackshift and re-download from the site. If the install fails, try restarting your computer.

Changes

  • Fixed a nasty Windows installer bug that was corrupting game files. I don't know why I can't write an installer. It shouldn't be difficult.
  • The key you press to dismiss the 'get ready' screen now also counts as input for the game. So, you no longer have to be quick with the double-press to get a good time.
  • Fixed a bug where, if you disabled sounds, then played for a bit, then enabled sounds, all the sounds that would have played during your session would play at once.
  • The game now keeps track of your best time for each standard level.
  • You can no longer use that editor trick to make the player start inside a block or enemy, because it was corrupting the game state and could lead to crashes.
    • You can still use the trick, because it's a neat trick and I don't mind it. Just not with blocks or enemies.
  • Fixed glitchy graphics when a customs door closed on a block.
    • This is sort of misleading now, because it looks like you can interact with the block and shoot it, but you actually can't. Oh well. Don't let it happen in your levels unless you enjoy confusing people.
  • Fixed bug where creating a level with non-English characters in its name would fail.
    • You used to have to submit the level using English characters, then rename it. Now you can just create it with the right title.

    2. It works but game loading slowed down to a crawl!

    3. Do you mean it's slow to load Blackshift, or slow to load Level Pit levels? Are numbered levels OK?

      Delete
    4. The numbered levels that I beat were missing until I beat one and they came back and ye, loading the level pit levels is slow. The game itself load quick enough - it's the Level Pit that is slow!

    5. Rob - I had to download the program again on my other computer as it still crashed but getting into the Level Pit is much quicker

  2. Rob, look at "Blocker Dan" in the Level Pit - Something wrong with the machine gun. It changes the tile to a one pass tile. Three crash reports were generated but 0 bytes in them. I will fix this level after you check it out!

  3. New level in my pit unbeaten. Had to fix it. "A Small Glitch! ;)" Ha ha ha ha! Nice to be an original Alpha tester and Rob has preserved all the levels in their original form. Ha ha ha, gonna fcuk up a few people the with schit I've done. BTW Rob, as you can see, the one pass tile also works with bombs and it was just a right click! Update 6 coming up! I have no idea why my Acer is bogging down on level refresh as my office machine is fine. Oh well, it's just a cheap ACER Win 8.1 piece of crap! :(

  4. Comment: On the Win Doctor, might be nice to give points like 3 for a win, 2 for second and 1 for third. Would make for an interesting competition. Since I can't win schit on the Win Doctor because everyone is ploughing into my level pit of over 370 beatable levels (some a bit bizarre) and I can't take a win from that which is fair. Just a thought - the original game had no winners. Can't remember what Netshift had but it did have instant replays which was cool so you could see where you fcuked up! Oh well, just throwing out ideas and I have a new unbeaten level out there because I am watching hockey! Ha ha ha!

  5. Anybody having trouble loading the Level Pit after the last update? My desktop Win7 loads fine but my portable Acer Win8.1 sucks!

  6. Okay, really strange thing is happening. I did a level with the multi bullet mushrooms and every time I changed the level in the background after it worked, the outcome changes! Methinks the programming is ladder logic so when you change the ending, you also have to change the beginning and really Mills, you put out the toughest levels but fepe always beats them - he/she needs to put out some levels! Still awaiting a blank black screen Rob on my Acer Win8.1.

Obie, for now, i don't have problems with the game, and i've just bought a laptop Lenovo Win10 i5 & GTX... ;)

    4. Hey guys! Thanks for your kind words :). I've been playing a lot more lately, and trying to beat all the levels I can. I'm never the fastest, though.

And I haven't been making levels because I'm not that good at it. But since you asked, I just gave it a try and made a few. Most of them are easy and speed based, which I don't really like, but are the easiest and fastest to build. I'll try and do an interesting one eventually.

I'd really appreciate your comments both as expert builders and seasoned players.

By the way, your last level has 6037 connector blocks in it and slows the game down to a crawl... if I can't make it faster I'll have to introduce a limit, say, max 500 connectors or nothing moves. Sorry! Computation has limits!

"Frobbing a Horsebox" is a quoteth from Sir Robin Allen hisseff in one of his most hilarious written diatribes on Foon.uk.co. Too bad he doesn't put them back on his page! 15. Hey Rob, since you store the amount of times a level has been played, do you also store how many times does any player has played a level?

I'd love to see some different ways to discover new levels, and the first thing I thought was sorting them by amount of times played, so I know if there's a level I haven't played yet, or played only a few times.

For now I go to each of the guys who usually publish levels (Obie, Mills, Bobby, etc) and I go page by page looking for unsolved levels, but I don't think that's the best way to do it.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I do store that! Actually I store a bunch of stuff that isn't shown anywhere yet, including replays for all deaths and death locations.

The "try these" list puts levels you haven't won first, but it doesn't discriminate between those you've played or not.

I know level discovery isn't great right now, and I'd like to make it better. Ideas I have for the near future:

      - Searching by difficulty, newness, other attributes
      - More than one page of results
      - Related levels on level pages
      - Activity feed on the main page: "Fepe played this, Obie made this", etc.

      Delete
    2. Awesome! I try to check Trello once in a while, and I'm very excited about some of those features, like the death heatmap.

How do you intend to determine the difficulty of a level? And how would you know if a level is related to another? Both those things seem like an interesting idea.

Keep it up, Rob. And me, for one, would love those release notes on updates. I know a lot of people usually just ticks the "never show me this" box, but for things I use a lot, and have a high rate of changes, like your game, I really like to know what's changed

      Delete
    3. Difficulty will either be plays ÷ wins (easy to compute) or unique players ÷ winners (a little harder). I feel like the latter will give more interesting data.

Related levels could use a few metrics: which items are in the levels, and how many of each. Difficulty. Size. Average play length. I think those would be a good start.

I'm a little torn on the release notes. I want to keep you guys informed, but I also like adding surprises and waiting for people to notice :)

      Delete
    4. Were you thinking of doing something automatic like displaying the commits of each release or write the release notes yourself each time? If it's the latter you could still hide the surprises and just list the major changes.

      Delete
    5. I'd write 'em manually. Your approach seems like a good way to go :)

    Replies
    1. Thanks! I tried to make all 7 of them as straight-forward as possible because I know that if I leave a block unaccounted for, you will find a way to beat the level in a way that negates everything I've done, haha.

    1. yes i think a level appears in the level pit when it's won, but it apppears in a chronological order, by the building/publishing date.

      Delete
  22. Rob's working on that right now, according to Trello: https://trello.com/b/sRSH07N1/blackshift-roadmap

    ReplyDelete
  23. Rob, in the Search function, could you fix it so that the exact name need not be typed and isn't case sensitive? I could not find Not Possible!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I wrote a comment about that a couple of days ago. I think the game needs a better way to find levels. Be it finding one you're specifically looking for, like in your case, or finding new levels to try.

I think we need more info on each level, and an easier way to filter by this pieces of info.

Difficulty I know Rob's considering, although I don't know how he'll judge it. Also rating a level, maybe after beating it (or just playing it?) you could be shown a thumbs up or down, or some sort of stars to give your opinion.

And also, the creator of the level could be required to beat their own level to avoid impossible levels and to set a sort of "par time", so you could also search for that.

And lastly, I think it would be awesome to find levels based on how many times (if any) you've played it.

tldr: It would be cool to find levels filtering them by difficulty, approximate time it takes to complete, rating and your and everybody else's play count.

      Delete
    2. You can already rate levels! Use the star on a level's page to register your approval.

      Delete
    3. Oh, I thought that was just to save it. That's how I use it. The levels I really like but can't seem to finish, I "store" them on favorites, and when I solve them, I remove them.

I use it as a sort of "don't forget to play these until you finish them" :P

      Delete
    4. Ah, that makes sense! Yeah, it has sort of a double meaning. It stores it for you as you discovered, but also the levels with the most stars are shown on the awards page.

      Delete
  24. My builder friends, how do you place items in the same place as others? Like a bullet in a conveyor belt? When I place a bullet it removes the conveyor belt and it's just a bullet in a "floor tile".

Is it something that was possible earlier and Rob fixed it, or is there some way to still do it now?

    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  25. you can not hide a bullet under an object anymore, i guess... but you can build a mechanism to place a block, for example, on the bullet. That's the way i used to hide the multi-bullet under a 'Yellow bomb block' in "TGV Aix-Paris".

    ReplyDelete
  26. Fepe, you've been doing some of my levels again - ha ha ha. The only way you can do that these days is by trickery! I will make a quick level so you can figure out how it's done.

    1. oh yeah good idea!!! i'm on it, too!!!

    2. Nice one. I got that one, though, I was more interested in placing things on conveyor belts. But I guess that's not possible anymore :(.

      Delete
    5. I made a slight modification to Hidden Stuff. Now it looks impossible - did I forget something?

      Delete
    6. I guess you did. I solved it almost exactly the same way

      Delete
    7. The trick Fepe was that I hid bombs under the directional tiles so it didn't look like there was a connection to the goal. I kinda like Mills demo though, he made it a lesson! ;)

  27. My new level was a test of naming in Alt Keys, it is not a clue - ha ha ha... A few traps. I wudda got a better time but had too many beers watching the hockey game - I will wait to see if you can figure it out. I believe there are no shortcuts Mills!

    ReplyDelete
  28. To be fair, if you screw up the colored doors, you can win them back. Look at the F key tile in the second grid. I don't like hiding schit, but, being a bad boy now!

      Delete
    3. actually, i had found several ways to pass this grid, but at the end, i didn't need it!!!
yes the ending is tricky, and it's enthusiastic to succeed this move!!!
i 'm sure too i can improve on my time, but i wait someone beat my score, and then, i will do it less than 2 minutes

By the way, Rob, i may have already said that, but i think it would be great that you can not watch the replay of someone who got a better time than yours (except for the builder, of course).

Moreover, if you win dying, you should be able to see only the replays of players who won dying

      Would it be possible, Rob?

  39. A few issues:

I need another movable block that I can blow up but contained within itself - you had that in the Netshift. I could blow up all the tiles but, just need one, a wood one that burns when you blow it up!

Looked at Triello, don't see you working on a fix for changing the multigun on anything but a blank screen when you right-click - that one is weird because it totally locks up the game.

You have seen my test results of your new update - some work needs to be done. I cannot load your program on this Lenovo and don't know why but methinks my IT guy messed it up because he does security programming for the US Government and yer program isn't registered for the monopolies that run this software! (My IT guy blocked Win updates but inadvertently blocked my security updates - he is more into Linux - he could prolly help you with Linux if you need it - you know my email address. Obie

I do get issues with the editor not coming up with "Publish Changes" and then after I edit it again, I get all the Publish changes I made and have no idea what I just edited? Weird so, sometimes I screw up - there is one level in my pit that I totally messed up a level that was kinda good. So, why don't you save the on your server if we publish them and ignore what is stored in the cache? Thanks - I got more if I can remember.... Ha ha ha - I am getting old, just applied for my Old Age Pension - how can someone live on $600 a month - huh?

  42. @Fepe - Another stupid mistake on Cloning Lasers, just a demo for Rob but I fixed it and now you have to do it my way or the highway! Ha ha ha!

Btw @Mills, you can edit levels on two computers by publishing it (without a win is better, so nobody can practice). However, if you go back and edit again on the original computer, you must go to C:/users/appdata/roaming/[your name]/blackshift/cache/levels and purge the files.

Sometimes this screws up if you have "levels in waiting" because you will purge them as well.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. BTW, on Cloning Lasers, look at the bottom clone machines and they have cloned a half laser in 4 sections - a bit of a glitch methinks!

      Delete
  43. Obie, on Cloning Lasers, how did you put a green bomb and a multi-bullet on the "erasable floor" tile ???!!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Use the circle tile and right click - a flaw that Rob needs to fix. Do not put a bullet on anything but a bare tile if you want a machine gun or the game will lock up. The reason is that both the tiles and the object are changeable the game doesn't know what to do methinks so, it locks up!

  49. Oui, Mill, I beat your Mission Impossible after running around like a chicken with my head cut off, will try it again tomorrow. Lenovo Win7 will not load the program or it fails. All I get is Blackshift not responding. I gotta talk to my IT guy because he has a habit of putting CIA security on my computers! Merde! 1. Trick my friends is a flaw which Mills and Bobby have found as well as myself on Mills "Practice Target". "K-Space Bar" sends two bullets at once but, I have built another where it doesn't work. Will publish it tomorrow. Kind of a nice feature so keep it Rob. As well, Mission Impossible likes to go north! A brilliant yet time consuming effort by Mills. Drop box on the sliders might even save you from a zap! 50. Blackshift will not load on my Lenovo Win7 portable Rob. I have downloaded it 3 times and dumped everything that is left after the uninstall - right click, delete. Gonzo! The screen comes up, turns to black, turns to the Blackshift game and "Not Responding". Had my IT guy load it on his portable and it worked apparently. WTF? Gonna look for an older version and download to see if the update works but, I doubt it! Fix it!

    1. After you uninstall, try deleting everything in %APPDATA%\Blackshift and %LOCALAPPDATA%\Blackshift.

    2. Did that and then re-booted. Downloaded the installer new and it doesn't work. Like I said, my IT guy may have taken out some processes that you need for your program - anything come to mind?

    3. Could you send me the logs in %APPDATA%\Blackshift\Logs ?

  51. hey!

today i was thinking about the "K/Space bar" to send 2bullets at once. And then, i thought that in the options, we can give 3 keys for an action. So i tried to send 3 bullets at once, and it worked!!!

But then, i wanted to send 4 bullet at once... but there is only 3 keys...
and i realized my "Corsair" keyboard has some porgrammable keys. I entered a double bullet in "G1" key, and another double bullet in "G2" Key !!! and it worked.
And theorically, i should be able to send 6 bullets at once, maybe more!!!
I think it's kind of cheating... it's not fair because i could build some levels only winnable by players with a programmable keyboard...

    i promise to you, i won't do it!!! ;)

    1. Nevermind, I just figured it out. Using 2 computers means I have to set the controls for each computer. I used the K,L, Spacebar but forgot to set it on my portable! The problem with the fact that programmable keyboards is that you can win certain levels. If Rob is going to detect cheating as noted in Triello notes, this should be one thing to detect (and I am not saying you would do that - just a note to Rob). I know you are a gamer and play fair Mills!

    2. Nope, I was wrong, the K,L,Spacebar crashes my computer and the laptop is getting hot! I cannot use a 3 shot combo on this portable!

    3. I also tried a few other combos on this portable but it crashed as well. Will try it again on my most powerful desktop manana. I tried KMSpace and same result but, don't have a lot of ram on this piece of crap! Loading levels takes forever, tried Fuzzy mode but, get rid of that option Rob! Oh, yeah Mills, I am #3 again because whenever we tie a game, the game wins change at random. I will be #2 again, prolly at your expense but you only got 4 pages to surf - I got 26 and have no idea who is sniffing my merde! Ha ha ha ha ha!

    4. PS, Rob, fix the installer as my Lenovo locks up on your latest update. Of course, the Lenovo is China made so, they are prolly trying to hack your website! Duh!

    5. When Rob introduces this game formally after Beta, he might want to have two menus, approved games and Alpha/Beta games. On SSB, he had a game only beaten by one and when I finally got to the goal after a brutal exercise, it was blocked. Too bad SSB is not on the menu because it was awesome but, Rob is focused on this project! Keep it going Rob, I am now copying my levels just in case.

    1. Yes obie, and it's exactly What i said 30 May 2017 at 15:45 ...

And After that, i built "multi X multi demo" to show you that it was possible to shoot up to 7 bullets at once.

I don't want to cheat. I've already Said it.
      Don't panic Obie! 😉😉😉

    2. Yabbut, you had to try it - it will be fixed, I still respect that you are a genius game builder! I start with a 3x3 square and let my imagination work. My last work went thru 15 changes - not that hard and I am sure you can beat my score. Just playing and trying to remember some of the games I made in Netshift - too bad Rob can't find them because he saved my Logon Name for me only! We are going to Steam which means the game will survive. That makes me happy.

  55. You can fix that game Mills by changing the blocker to a 2 shot so the programmed 3 shot benefit works without special keyboards and we can all take a shot he he, at it. I am looking thru my 26 pages of levels to see where I can prevent this game modifier can happen. You may see some changes on some of my levels and Rob - make sure that this is included in cheat code. 3 shots max!

BTW Fepe - you just blasted me on my last 2 levels - I will getcha! Nothing to change, just fingers! Ha ha ha

    1. This whole thing is a bug and is going away — it'll be 1 shot max.

    2. That is fair! And, I will not exploit it.
